BREAKING: Washington Sundar Ruled Out

India vs New Zealand ODI series update

Washington Sundar has been ruled out of the ongoing ODI series against New Zealand due to a left lower rib injury (a side strain) sustained during the first match in Vadodara on Sunday, January 11, 2026. He is expected to take around a fortnight to recover and is a concern for the upcoming T20 World Cup.

Injury Details & Recovery
Sundar experienced acute discomfort in his left lower rib area while bowling and left the field midway through New Zealand’s innings. Despite the pain, he later batted at number eight to help India win the match.
  • Injury Type: Left lower rib injury/side strain.
  • Status: Ruled out of the remaining two ODIs against New Zealand.
  • Recovery Timeline: Expected to take approximately two weeks to recover.
  • Next Steps: He traveled to Mumbai for further scans and medical advice from the BCCI medical team.
  • Replacement: Ayush Badoni has been named as his replacement for the remainder of the ODI series.

Ayush Badoni has been named as the replacement for Washington Sundar in the Indian squad for the remainder of the ODI series against New Zealand. Sundar was ruled out after sustaining a rib injury during the first ODI at the BCA Stadium in Vadodara, forcing the team management to make a change ahead of the upcoming matches.

The injury occurred while Washington Sundar was bowling in the opening match, and although he later came out to bat during India’s successful chase, medical assessments confirmed that he would be unable to continue in the series. As a precautionary measure, the selectors decided to rest the all-rounder and avoid any further risk.

Ayush Badoni’s inclusion marks an important opportunity for the young batter, who has impressed with his performances in domestic cricket and franchise leagues. Known for his calm temperament and ability to handle pressure situations, Badoni adds depth to India’s middle order as the team looks to maintain momentum in the ODI series against New Zealand.

With this change, Team India will aim to adjust their combination while ensuring balance in both batting and bowling departments for the remaining matches of the series.
